Welcome to the Department of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering!

Our objective is to provide the students interdisciplinary training and intensive research experience with state-of-the-art technologies in the advanced field of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering. Our graduates are employed both in academia and industry. Department of Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering was founded in 1998, and the Founding Chairman was Professor Dr. M. Alauddin, a reputed professor and ex-Vice Chancellor of Islamic University, Kushtia. Dr. Nilufa Akhter Banu is the current Chairman of the department. The department is located on the 2nd floor at the Faculty of Applied Science and Technology, Islamic University, Kushtia.

The department offers BSc (Honours), MSc, MPhil and PhD programme in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering. Currently, there are 300 students enrolled in the BSc and MSc programme. Students are admitted once a year in January.

Research scopes at the department are wide and varied. Current research includes screening of soil microorganisms for antibiotic and antifungal compounds, biological control of wheat and rice blast diseases, control of bacterial biofilm formation, screening of anti-quorum sensing properties of plant extracts, antibiotic resistance, the molecular mechanism of antibiotic action, plant cell and tissue culture, and plant physiology under stressed condition.
